Medium Tank M4, also known as the M4 Sherman or simply 'Sherman' was a United States Medium Tank that saw service during World War II and the Korean War. It was based on the M3 Lee, and named after Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Medium Tank M4 was designed with reliability and ease of production at the forefront, and was a core Armored Fighting Vehicle for the Western Allies during World War II. The M4 Chassis was also the base for multiple other AFVs and engineering vehicles. Originally, Medium Tank M4 was armed with one 75mm M3 cannon with a 40 calibers barrel, and Two M1919 7.62x63mm Light Machine guns, and a roof-mounted 12.7x99mm M2HB Heavy Machine Gun. The 75mm M3 Cannon was capable of both anti-armor and anti-personnel roles, having six different types of ammuntion, four of which commonly used against infantry; The M48 High Explosive round, The T30 Canister round, and the M89 and M64 smoke rounds. A total of 49,324 M4 Shermans were built, in variants M4, M4A1, M4A2, M4A3, M4A4, M4A5, and M4A6. Later in the war, after finding the 75mm M61 APCBC-HE-T round being ineffective against newer Nazi tanks (Panzer V 'Panther', Panzer VI Ausf. A Tiger I, and Panzer VI Ausf. B Tiger II, as well as the Jadgpanther and Jadgtiger tank destroyers) the highs velocity 76mm M1, which featured less performance on the High Explosive and Smoke shells, but far higher performance on the AP and APCBC-HE-T shells. Late in the war, A some 75mm and a sparse few 76mm M4A3 HVSS (Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension) were upgraded to the M4A3E2 tanks, which featured additional armor plates welded to the front and sides of the tank, even capable at stopping the infamous Panzer VI Ausf. A Tiger I's 88mm anti tank gun at normally lethal ranges. The M4 Sherman featured few downsides in it's role as a anti-infantry tank, with the main problem being the high vertical profile. Despite modern criticisms, and comparing it to the Tiger I and Tiger II, the M4 Sherman was an incredibly reliable tank, and featured much postwar service, such as South Vietnam, Paraguay, Iran, Saudi Arabia, , and the Balkans. Despite heavy losses (12,000 out of 49,000) the M4 Sherman was not the most destroyed tank, which was the Soviet T-34 with 44,000 out of 84,000 (Both 76mm and 85mm variants) lost.
